{"id":7409,"date":"2024-09-02T08:56:43","date_gmt":"2024-09-02T06:56:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/disabilityconnect.co.za\/?p=7409"},"modified":"2024-09-02T08:56:43","modified_gmt":"2024-09-02T06:56:43","slug":"mpumelelo-mhlongo-wins-gold-to-bag-team-sas-first-medal-at-paralympic-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.disabilityconnectexpo.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/02\/mpumelelo-mhlongo-wins-gold-to-bag-team-sas-first-medal-at-paralympic-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Mpumelelo Mhlongo wins gold to bag Team SA\u2019s first medal at Paralympic Games"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mpumelelo Mhlongo bagged South Africa\u2019s first medal at the Paralympic Games in Paris on Sunday night, winning gold in the men\u2019s T44 100m sprint final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/sport\/mpumelelo-mhlongo-wins-gold-paralympic-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">By Wesley Botton &#8211; The Citizen<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mhlongo, a two-time world champion, dashed across the line in 11.12 seconds, with Cuban athlete Yamel Vives Suares taking the runner-up spot in 11.20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the men\u2019s T47 high jump final, Khumo Pitso finished fifth after clearing the bar at 1.98 metres, setting a new African record, and Lizel Gouws was eighth in the women\u2019s T37 long jump final with a best leap of 3.62m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier on Sunday in the track and field competition, visually impaired distance runner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/sport\/louzanne-coetzee-targets-paralympic-podium\/\">Louzanne Coetzee<\/a> (with her guide Erasmus Badenhorst) finished second in her T11 1 500m heat in 4:45.25, booking her place in the final to be held this morning (10.10am).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yane van der Merwe did not register a legal jump in the women\u2019s F64 discus throw final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-sports\">Other sports<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elsewhere in the morning session at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/tag\/paralympics\/\">Paris Games<\/a>, 51-year-old archer Shaun Anderson did well to edge out Turkish opponent Yigit Aydin with a 133-132 victory in the 1\/8 elimination round of the individual men\u2019s W1 competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anderson went on to dig deep in the quarterfinals but he was handed a narrow 136-134 defeat against Zhang Tianxin, missing out on a place in the semifinals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the wheelchair tennis court, the quad doubles pairing of Donald Ramphadi and Lucas Sithole were defeated in their semifinal clash against Sam Schroder and Niels Vink of the Netherlands (6-1 6-1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ramphadi and Sithole will turn out again in the&nbsp;bronze medal match on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alwande Sikhosana was eliminated in the second round of the men\u2019s singles tournament, losing his match against Daisuke Arai (6-1 6-0).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mpumelelo Mhlongo bagged South Africa\u2019s first medal at the Paralympic Games in Paris on Sunday night, winning gold in the men\u2019s T44 100m sprint final.
