{"id":7223,"date":"2024-03-14T12:23:16","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T10:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/disabilityconnect.co.za\/?p=7223"},"modified":"2024-03-14T12:23:16","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T10:23:16","slug":"cycle-tour-for-children-with-disabilities-a-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.disabilityconnectexpo.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/14\/cycle-tour-for-children-with-disabilities-a-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Cycle Tour for children with disabilities a success"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a successful mission to raise R10 000 for the Red Cross War Memorial Children\u2019s Hospital\u2019s RX Radio, Qaqamba Cuba and Ettienne Wilsnagh conquered the 109-kilometre Cape Town Cycle Tour and made it across the finish line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/capeargus\/news\/cycle-tour-for-children-with-disabilities-a-success-9668cf8d-0b16-4143-96b6-266e7fbd9495\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">By Marsha Dean &#8211; Cape Times<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am very happy I did the race and managed to raise the target for RX Radio,\u201d said Cuba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was scared of going downhill, the uphill was fine even though they were struggling because they had to put in a lot of effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI felt bad but going downhill was not my favourite but I trusted Ettienne because he\u2019s been doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cuba, 24, who lives with congenital scoliosis, participated in the race in a buggy attached to Wilsnagh\u2019s bicycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They worked in collaboration with Warrior on Wheels and completed the race in 4 hours 51 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After completing the 109-km route, Cuba said they achieved their target of raising R10 000 for RX Radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RX Radio is run by children for children but continues to experience financial difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cuba serves as a board member at the station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am excited that we reached the target because I would\u2019ve felt bad if I did the cycle tour and did not reach the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am very happy, it will make so much difference to the station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am very thankful to everyone who contributed to my campaign and shared the post, it is much appreciated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilsnagh, 56, was not new to riding for causes, and described his experience with Cuba as \u201cspecial\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is my fifth race with a buggy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPreviously, I had to take care of the children because they were very disabled but with Qaqamba she was able to sustain and take care of herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe came first by nearly an hour before the second buggy crossed the finish line, so it was spectacular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe was an absolute rock star, it was a special day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am still aching and my legs feel broken, but it was worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilsnagh said he would continue with more fund-raisers and aimed to race in Durban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">marsha.dean@inl.co.za<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a successful mission to raise R10 000 for the Red Cross War Memorial Children\u2019s Hospital\u2019s RX Radio, Qaqamba Cuba and Ettienne Wilsnagh conquered the 109-kilometre Cape Town Cycle Tour and made it across the finish line.
