{"id":7191,"date":"2024-02-13T08:54:15","date_gmt":"2024-02-13T06:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/disabilityconnect.co.za\/?p=7191"},"modified":"2024-02-13T08:54:15","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T06:54:15","slug":"shack-road-not-for-a-wheelchair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.disabilityconnectexpo.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/13\/shack-road-not-for-a-wheelchair\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Shack, road not for a wheelchair&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Katlego Seabela, a born-free unemployed paraplegic who still lives in a shack in Mamelodi Phase 2, east of Pretoria, struggles to identify with the fictitious character Tintswalo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sowetanlive.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/2024-02-12-shack-road-not-for-a-wheelchair\/\">By Noxolo Sibiya &#8211; Sowetan Live<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raised by a single mother who worked as a security guard, Seabela grew up in an informal settlement in Mamelodi with no water and electricity. He matriculated from Stanza Bopape Secondary School, a no-fee school where he would get a free meal during lunch. His mother\u00a0 could barely afford to buy her children clothes and food.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seabela was not always paralysed. The father of one&nbsp;was allegedly shot by police in 2018 in a case of mistaken identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe police were looking for someone and they thought it was me. I was confused because I knew nothing about what they were talking about and we had a disagreement during which I was shot,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doctors told him he would not be able to walk again. He was in denial and his life took a different turn.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.disabilityconnectexpo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Acessibility-Katlego-Seabela-563x694.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7192\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He only returned to work after two years of recovery. Even then his body struggled to keep up with the demands of the job as a cashier.&nbsp;\u201cIt was hard for me to lift some items at the till. One afternoon after an eight-hour shift, my hands locked and could not work any more, so I had to stop working,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He searched for admin, call centre and office work with no luck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div id=\"content\" class=\"  sowetan-live \"><div class=\"body-content \"><div id=\"article\" class=\"None comments-enabled\" data-article-key=\"5182569105588224\"><div class=\"article-wrapper--body\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-md-12 col-lg-8\"><div class=\"article-widgets\"><div id=\"da0a6e09-2ff0-4c6d-a946-cf8572b5bf2c\" class=\"article-widget article-widget-text\" aria-label=\"widget-anchor\" rel=\"text\"><div class=\"wrap\"><div class=\"text\"><p><span>His neighbourhood eventually got access to water but he said  the lack of tarred roads made it impractical for him to move around in a  wheelchair.\u00a0\u201cI must rely on people to  get me around and, in some cases, lift me up because it&#8217;s hard to move  on gravel. Our shacks  were not designed to accommodate a wheelchair, so  I need help getting in and out of the house.\u201cAccessing  public transport is a nightmare. The issue is not the attitude of  taxi  drivers but the practicality of having a wheelchair in a taxi. My  wheelchair has to take an extra seat, so that means if the taxi only has  one seat available, I cannot be accommodated. I also need someone to  help me into the taxi.\u201d\u00a0He depends on a disability grant, which he also uses to support his mother and  child.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><span>Seabela  said while he was aware of attempts by  companies to cater for people  living with disabilities, more could be done by the government to ensure  that public facilities such as taxi ranks and schools are accessible to  people living with disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThough I cannot lift heavy things, my hands and brain work well.
