{"id":6429,"date":"2022-08-04T09:15:46","date_gmt":"2022-08-04T07:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/disabilityconnect.co.za\/?p=6429"},"modified":"2022-08-04T09:15:46","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T07:15:46","slug":"beyonce-to-remove-offensive-lyric-after-disabled-community-outcry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.disabilityconnectexpo.com\/index.php\/2022\/08\/04\/beyonce-to-remove-offensive-lyric-after-disabled-community-outcry\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyonc\u00e9 to remove offensive lyric after disabled community outcry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyonc\u00e9 will re-record the track from her latest album Renaissance on which she originally sang the lyrics &#8220;Spazzin&#8217; on that ass.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By AFP<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyonc\u00e9 will remove a derogatory term for disabled people from her new song <em>Heated,<\/em> a spokesperson said Monday, after its use was condemned as offensive by campaigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US pop megastar will re-record the track from her latest album <em>Renaissance<\/em> on which she originally sang the lyrics \u201cSpazzin\u2019 on that ass, spazz on that ass.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe word, not used intentionally in a harmful way, will be replaced,\u201d a spokesperson for Beyonc\u00e9 told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afp.com\/en\/news-hub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AFP<\/a> via email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Co-written with Canadian rapper Drake, the dance track appears to use the word \u201cspaz\u201d in the colloquial sense of temporarily losing control or acting erratically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But disability campaigners noted that the word is derived from \u201cspastic.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>, spasticity is a movement disorder involving stiff muscles and awkward movement, suffered by 80% of people with cerebral palsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In June, US singer Lizzo re-recorded her song <em>Grrrls<\/em> to remove the same term following complaints that it was derogatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australian disability campaigner Hannah Diviney said the inclusion of the word by Beyonc\u00e9 \u201cfeels like a slap in the face to me, the disabled community &amp; the progress we tried to make with Lizzo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGuess I\u2019ll just keep telling the whole industry to \u2018do better\u2019 until ableist slurs disappear from music,\u201d she tweeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s eagerly anticipated seventh solo studio album <em>Renaissance<\/em> was released 29 July, drawing mainly positive reviews with its nods to disco and electronic dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other collaborators on the album \u2013 which leaked online in the days prior to its official release \u2013 include Nile Rodgers, Skrillex, Nigerian singer Tems, Grace Jones, Pharrell and Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s rap mogul husband Jay-Z.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an Instagram post published soon after the album\u2019s release, Beyonc\u00e9 said creating the album \u201callowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking.
