{"id":4660,"date":"2021-02-03T14:52:48","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T12:52:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/disabilityconnect.co.za\/?p=4660"},"modified":"2021-02-03T14:52:48","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T12:52:48","slug":"a-we-can-award-for-the-dj-who-certainly-can","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.disabilityconnectexpo.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/03\/a-we-can-award-for-the-dj-who-certainly-can\/","title":{"rendered":"A WE CAN award for the DJ who certainly can"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>By Samantha&nbsp;Malebana for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisability.co.za\/2021\/01\/21\/we-can-award-for-dj-who-certainly-can\/\">ThisAbility<\/a><\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A&nbsp;house, deep house and Afro music DJ&nbsp;has been awarded a We Can Arts Festival&nbsp;award for&nbsp;his&nbsp;contribution&nbsp;to&nbsp;the entertainment industry beyond his disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Siyanda Makanya (42),&nbsp;also known as DJ Kabila,&nbsp;from Mthatha, Eastern Cape won the award at the festival that was held in Durban late last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Makanya told&nbsp;ThisAbility&nbsp;that winning this award fuelled him with energy to carry on inspiring others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo be recognised as someone who has [excelled] within the music space beyond your disability shows that when you are dedicated to whatever you pursue, one day someone will tap you on the shoulder and say \u2018we see you\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An inspiration to others who think they can&#8217;t<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thabani Mazibuko (44),&nbsp;festival director at We Can Arts Festival,&nbsp;said he has known Makanya for a very long time performing at various clubs and events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe same way DJ Kabila, Sgwili, Steve Kekana and many more used their talents to express themselves,should inspire other persons with disabilities to explore their talents too,\u201d&nbsp;said Mazibuko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;festival was initiated in 2015 by Outrage Concept and is now held&nbsp;annually&nbsp;in&nbsp;different&nbsp;provinces. The festival recognises&nbsp;and awards&nbsp;artists with disabilities from performing artists, crafters to book writers whom the organisers&nbsp;believe have managed to make it big in the art industry&nbsp;against all odds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Makanya&nbsp;was involved in a car accident at the age of 21&nbsp;after which&nbsp;he was declared&nbsp;a&nbsp;paraplegic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI quickly adapted and accepted my disability when my mother had to go work in Pretoria and I had to stay to study electronic engineering at Port Elizabeth Technical College. That\u2019s when I knew that regardless of the situation,&nbsp;whatever I wanted to achieve was dependent on me,\u201d&nbsp;said&nbsp;Makanya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to the accident that&nbsp;made him&nbsp;a wheelchair&nbsp;user,&nbsp;Makanya&nbsp;was a dancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy love for music still remains&nbsp;unmatched because&nbsp;two months after my accident I started exploring my talent with beats to become a full\u2013time DJ that I am today,\u201d&nbsp;he&nbsp;said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The hit maker<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWorking with Black Coffee was a wonderful&nbsp;experience as he has vast knowledge,\u201d Makanya said. \u201cFrom him I learnt that perseverance is the key to get to the top.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DJ&nbsp;released his first house music album&nbsp;titled <em>Believe&nbsp;<\/em>in 2007 influenced by Black coffee,&nbsp;the&nbsp;childhood friend&nbsp;he grew up with in&nbsp;Mthatha.&nbsp;His album received much love from the&nbsp;public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2011&nbsp;Makanya&nbsp;dropped&nbsp;a&nbsp;Soulistic&nbsp;Cuts Volume 1compilation&nbsp;album&nbsp;that featured Black Coffee, MXO, Sai&amp;&nbsp;Ribatone&nbsp;and American vocalist&nbsp;Marissa Guzman&nbsp;on a track titled \u201cTime&nbsp;To&nbsp;Go\u201d&nbsp;which got nominated&nbsp;in&nbsp;the South African Music Awards under the&nbsp;Best&nbsp;Remixed&nbsp;Tracks&nbsp;category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of&nbsp;Makanya\u2019s&nbsp;most loved hits,&nbsp;\u201cAtsha&nbsp;Pha\u201d from his third album titled&nbsp;Music Will Save The Day,&nbsp;got recognition&nbsp;worldwide and&nbsp;its remix was selected&nbsp;for&nbsp;DJ Black Coffee\u2019s mix tape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWorking with Black Coffee was a wonderful\u00a0experience as he has vast knowledge,\u201d Makanya said. \u201cFrom him I learnt that perseverance is the key to get to the top.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisability.co.za\/\">ThisAbility<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Samantha&nbsp;Malebana for ThisAbility A&nbsp;house, deep house and Afro music DJ&nbsp;has been awarded a We Can Arts Festival&nbsp;award for&nbsp;his&nbsp;contribution&nbsp;to&nbsp;the entertainment industry beyond his disability.
