Atang guesthouse has been declared the best guesthouse in Tembisa by Gauteng Women in Tourism (WiT), at an awards ceremony held in Boksburg, Gauteng on August 30. Lockdown level 2 guidelines were followed and only 50 people were in attendance, seated two metres apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karabo Nguyuza, the guesthouse owner, does not know who nominated her business, however, she is grateful for the nomination and the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel excited to see that as young black women we are finally being recognised for our good work. I am thrilled to have been recognised by\u00a0WiT, especially now because businesses have not been doing well due to\u00a0the\u00a0COVID\u201319 pandemic\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The development and empowerment of women<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

The WiT programme is a government initiative that \u201cpropels and supports the development and empowerment of women in the tourism sector\u201d according to www.tourism.gov.za<\/a>. \u201cThe programme serves as a mechanism to elevate the status of women in tourism by providing training, empowerment and networking opportunities that facilitate their competitiveness as entrepreneurs, professionals and leaders,\u201d the website continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winners are carefully selected by the industry\u2019s experts after visiting the nominated guesthouses and spending a night to observe the service delivery and review customer feedback found on social pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atang\u00a0won the best guesthouse in\u00a0Tembisa\u00a0for its excellent service, beating the other four guesthouses in the township.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a030\u2013year\u2013old\u00a0Nguyuza\u00a0who\u00a0contracted polio at the age of 14,\u00a0is the first person with a disability\u00a0to own a guesthouse\u00a0in\u00a0Tembisa. She\u00a0is an\u00a0activist for social change\u00a0and her main goal is to empower women to get into business. \u00a0Atang\u00a0has been operating since January 2017\u00a0and can accommodate up to 24 people.\u00a0Nguyuza\u00a0says as\u00a0a\u00a0guest house owner with a disability\u00a0she brings something different\u00a0to the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


\u201cWith\u00a0all the guesthouses in\u00a0Tembisa,\u00a0Atang\u00a0is the one with universal accessibility and we also have free transportation for guests with disabilities. I feel so humble and privileged to be in the position that I am right now, knowing that other women look up to me and I am happy that I am a role model to both young and old women”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
